Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
